GTC Championship

The 59-mile Yargo-High Shoals route was the battleground that would decide the 2005 GTC club champion. Being the club president, webmaster, race team director and one of the oldest members, I felt obligated to be competitive at this inaugural event.

I had previewed and memorized the course in the weeks previous to the race. My brother Doug volunteered to drive the support car, which gave me more confidence.

Following our race director, Mike Owens, motivational pre-race speech, I decided to attack from the beginning and try my luck with a breakaway. I didn't know that everyone would leave me out there to fry by myself the entire way.

After a brutal 2:38:57 of pedaling at my threshold, I crossed the finish line. The chasing peloton arrived about five minutes later, lead by David Alley with Carey McDurmon on his wheel.

After it was all done I had averaged 22.3 MPH solo for 59 miles, and that officially makes me one very tired bike rider!

Dan: So glad you were able to blow everyone away yesterday. I just wish you wouldn't stress your body so much. I was very happy to hear that your after-stress symptoms were diminished and perhaps are going to be just a bad memory.

Last night on "Desparate H/Ws", one of the main characters husband died. I cannot imagine what my life would be w/o you. I watched my Mom go through that (as well as experienced it as a daughter). The majority of my concern for you is out of love. I guess it's a bit selfish that I don't want to be left w/o you but there it is.

I hope you have a pleasant day and drink some Vit C "koolaid" - I think it helps. Love B

Question: Dan,
If you were trying to do a personal best century, would you also stick to 150bpm (AT?) for the entire 4-5 (or so) hours? How long would you hold that kind of heart rate for long rides, and what would you back off to.. if you would back off.. for longer (6+ hour) rides?

Doug, good question. It depends, but a fit and experienced rider might be something like this:

12 or 24 hour event = Zone 1-3
PB century = Zone 4
45-60 minute criterium or TT = Zone 5a
